Let’s start with the definition of the lacrimal lake, as you may guess, the lacrimal lake is a pool of tears in the lower section of the eye that drains into the tear drainage system. Actually, we have a lacrimal liquid spread all over the eye with the help of eye blinks.
The lacrimal fluid actually, the tears is water of antibacterial agentlysozyme that enters the upper eyelid to wash all over the eyes. As a result, the cornea is moistened and protected from dehydration. By aging, the eyelids get loosened and lacrimal lakes keep more fluid. The common issue about the lacrimal gland is inflammation or swelling.
So if you look at the mirror to your eyes closely you will see a lacrimal papilla which is at the corner of the eye and the nose as an elevation. If you slightly open the lower eye and look at the corner point you will see the lacrimal punctum. Don’t worry this is normal and your eyes are not damaged. The lacrimal punctum is linked to the lacrimal canaliculi which are the small channels for tears. These lacrimal punta openings are located in both upper and lower corner of the eyelids.
Lacrimal canaliculi follow a way to the lacrimal sac, then from the lacrimal sac, the liquid tears reach the nasolacrimal duct. The fluid passes through the nasal cavity and mixes with the mucus or maybe you can swallow the fluid too. So this is why you have nasal draining while you are crying!
Due to the conditions of the tear-producing your eyes may have lacrimal lake swelling. The symptoms for lacrimal lake swelling or in other ways lacrimal gland inflammations are
● redness in the eyelid
● dry eye or excessive tearing
● inflammation in the eye
● discomfort in blinking
The symptoms can show mumps but you should visit your doctor and after having the diagnosis the treatment should be applied. Generally, lacrimal gland swelling is treated easily as they are commonly happening acutely due the bacterial infection and can be treated by the doctor with warm compresses. The chronic effect may be the reason for eye thyroid disorder.
One of the problems of the lacrimal system is Nasolacrimal duct obstruction. The problem may occur in the first 6 months of the newborns and can be treated with nasal massages, eye drops, or topical antibiotics. If the problem occurs after 12 months then surgery may be needed to open the drainage which is the blocked tear duct. With early diagnosis the operation can be done by the practitioner, however, If the diagnoses are not certain the child should be cared by an ophthalmologist.
