The American Academy of Ophthalmology is warning the public about over-the-counter eye drops that claim to change eye color. These products, popularized on social media platforms like TikTok, are unproven, unregulated, and could pose significant risks to eye health.
These eye color-changing drops have not been approved by the FDA. This means they have not undergone the necessary safety and efficacy testing to ensure they are safe for use. The manufacturing practices for these products are also unregulated, raising concerns about contamination that could lead to severe eye infections.
The use of unregulated eye drops can result in several dangerous side effects, including:
• Inflammation
• Infection
• Light sensitivity
• Increased eye pressure or glaucoma
• Permanent vision loss
Manufacturers of these drops often claim that the products can alter the melanin levels in the iris, the colored part of the eye. However, there is no scientific evidence to support these claims. Moreover, if the drops were to affect the pigmented cells in the iris, it could lead to serious complications such as light sensitivity, eye inflammation, and potential vision loss. The impact on other eye parts that rely on melanin, such as the retina, is also unknown.
Dr. JoAnn A. Giaconi, a clinical spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology, emphasizes the risks associated with these products. "Social media and the internet are full of potentially dangerous eye health claims. Bottom line, the Academy advises the public to never put anything in the eye that isn’t made to go in the eye," said Dr. Giaconi. "You’re putting yourself at risk for painful eye conditions or even blindness."
For those interested in changing their eye color, the safest option is to use colored contact lenses. However, it is crucial to ensure that these lenses are prescribed, dispensed, and fitted by a qualified eye health professional.
