A panel of leading ophthalmic surgeons from the UK (Dr. Sheraz Daya, Chairman & Medical Director at Centre for Sight), Germany (Prof. Walter Sekundo, Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at Philips University of Marburg) and Italy (Dr. Miguel Rechichi, Medical Director at Centro Poliespecialistico Mediterrareno), shared their real-world experience with ArtIOLs® (Voptica S.L.), a new family of non-diffractive extended depth of focus (EDOF) intraocular lenses.

ArtIOLs® (Voptica S. L) are redefining the non-diffractive extended depth of focus (EDOF) category. Unlike conventional EDOF designs, which often rely on diffractive steps or abrupt surface transitions, ArtIOLs® use a fully smooth, continuously varying aspheric geometry on both optical surfaces. This dual-asphere approach, combined with a unique inverted meniscus profile, creates a natural, uninterrupted visual range with exceptional contrast and virtually no photic phenomena.

Developed under the direction of Prof. Pablo Artal (LOUM Director and University of Murcia Full Professor), the lenses achieve their EDOF effect through controlled negative spherical aberration, gradually increasing in the different ArtIOLs® models.

“We designed a completely different concept of lens that tackles two major issues, better full range of vision without photic phenomena & enhanced peripheral vision for daily activities like walking, reading, or driving.” explained Prof. Artal.

Surgeons Validate High Optical Quality and Patient Satisfaction

During the webinar, the participating surgeons presented consistent outcomes highlighting the lens’ optical quality, stability, and high patient satisfaction. Prof. Walter Sekundo shared findings from a comparative pilot study in refractive lens exchange patients, where ArtIOLs® demonstrated performance equal to or better than a leading non-diffractive EDOF lens.

“The Art40 and Art70 combination achieved better near vision and high patient satisfaction, performing at least as well as leading lenses, and in some parameters, even better,” noted Prof. Sekundo.

Dr. Miguel Rechichi echoed these findings, highlighting the lens’ natural visual performance and patient comfort. “What impressed me most is the quality of vision, comparable to that of a 20-year-old, with no dysphotopsia,” he said. He also reported that more than half of his patients achieved spectacle independence, adding that “the night vision quality is particularly impressive, comparable to monofocal lenses but with far greater range.”

Dr. Sheraz Daya further emphasized the optical benefits of ArtIOLs design, particularly its ability to extend the range of focus while maintaining clarity across all distances.

“The lens is very cleverly designed as an inverted meniscus implant, which not only improves peripheral vision but also increases the range of focus by adding negative spherical aberration. What’s really nice is that we have a lens that achieves this without causing any dysphotopsia at all,” said Dr. Daya.

Tailored Performance Across the ArtIOLs® Family

The product line includes multiple models incorporating progressively higher levels of negative spherical aberration. This allows surgeons to select an option that best supports individual visual needs, while maintaining the hallmark smooth, non-diffractive optical profile.

Precision Engineering and Optical Stability

ArtIOLs® are made from hydrophobic acrylic and feature an aspheric EDOF optic that achieves its extended depth of focus through controlled negative spherical aberration and an inverted meniscus design that mimics the natural crystalline lens. The lenses incorporate a C-L haptic for stability and a square-edge design.

The lenses are available in a power range from +10.00D to +30.00D, offered in 0.50D increments to meet a wide spectrum of refractive requirements. Their non-diffractive optics minimize halos, glare, starbursts, and negative dysphotopsia while maintaining exceptional image quality and contrast sensitivity.

Advancing Non-Diffractive Lens Technology

The clinical experiences and design characteristics discussed by the surgeons highlight the potential of ArtIOLs® within the expanding field of non-diffractive intraocular lenses. The lenses combine features aimed at maintaining contrast sensitivity and extending the range of focus, while minimizing photic phenomena and supporting visual function across different distances.
