UCL-Moorfields Eye Hospital Secures £5M to Open New Research Center

February 08, 2024

The Sir Jules Thorn Charitable Trust has allocated £5 million towards the establishment of a  research center within Oriel, the collaborative initiative between UCL and Moorfields Eye Hospital aimed at advancing eye health.

Partnering with Moorfields Eye Charity and Moorfields Eye Hospital, the funding will facilitate the creation of a cutting-edge investigation center, expediting crucial research and accelerating the delivery of treatments to patients.

The investment in the Sir Jules Thorn Investigation Centre will provide unprecedented opportunities to enhance our comprehension and treatment of eye diseases, fostering collaboration between research, treatment, and education.

Scheduled to open in 2027 in Camden, the new center will unite Moorfields Eye Hospital, the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, and Moorfields Eye Charity, fostering research synergy and innovation in eye disease management.

Supported by the Sir Jules Thorn Charitable Trust, the world-class research facilities at the heart of the new center will facilitate translational research, directly benefiting patients by bringing together fundamental and clinical trial facilities, state-of-the-art imaging technology, and diverse patient cohorts.

This generous contribution, marking the Trust's 50th anniversary, underscores a commitment to deeper collaboration between researchers, clinicians, patients, and educators. It is poised to catalyze research breakthroughs on a global scale, with implications for sight-saving interventions worldwide.

Aligned with Oriel's innovation hub, the funding will also bolster ongoing artificial intelligence (AI) research by UCL and Moorfields, enhancing early disease detection capabilities for conditions such as dementia, multiple sclerosis, and certain cancers.
