Heru Reaches Milestone with Over One Million Eyes Tested Using Wearable Platform

November 17, 2025

Heru has announced that its wearable diagnostic platform has been used to examine more than one million eyes. The FDA-registered device, developed to modernize traditional eye exams, integrates artificial intelligence and virtual reality into a compact, portable headset designed for a range of clinical environments.

About the Heru Platform

Founded by Mohamed Abou Shousha, MD, PhD, associate professor of ophthalmology at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Heru’s platform is designed to digitize and automate eye exams that are typically performed using larger, manual equipment. The wearable device incorporates AI, VR, and user-centric design to consolidate multiple vision tests into a single headset.

Heru’s platform is FDA-registered and protected by 74 patents. Its portability and automation aim to improve access to diagnostic tools in both traditional clinics and remote or community-based settings.

How the Platform Works

The system guides patients through standardized exams using interactive visual stimuli. AI algorithms adjust testing parameters in real time to tailor the experience to each individual. Clinicians receive objective results immediately through a digital dashboard, allowing for rapid interpretation and integration into electronic health records.

According to Heru, this approach supports workflow efficiency and facilitates access to diagnostic testing across different care settings.

Clinical Applications and Test Suite

Heru’s platform supports a range of vision assessments, including visual acuity, pupil assessment, eye alignment and motility, color vision, and visual field testing.

These tests are commonly used in both routine and specialized eye care and are now available in a portable format through the Heru device.

Statement from the Founder

Commenting on the milestone, Dr. Abou Shousha said:

“Surpassing 1 million eyes tested is a testament to the trust that eye care professionals have placed in Heru to help them care for their patients. This milestone represents a million opportunities where patients received a higher standard of care, where doctors were empowered with immediate, objective data and where vision-threatening conditions may have been detected earlier.”
