Heidelberg Engineering Joins CCOI Through EssilorLuxottica’s Vision Architect Membership

November 17, 2025

Heidelberg Engineering has joined the Collaborative Community on Ophthalmic Innovation (CCOI) through EssilorLuxottica’s Vision Architect membership. This partnership marks a significant step in supporting collaborative efforts to advance innovation, evaluation, and clinical integration of ophthalmic technologies, particularly in the fields of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and glaucoma.

About the CCOI

The Collaborative Community on Ophthalmic Innovation (CCOI) is a public–private forum uniting key stakeholders across the ophthalmic ecosystem. These include patients, clinicians, researchers, regulators, industry representatives, and payors. The goal of CCOI is to accelerate the development, assessment, and adoption of ophthalmic medical products by fostering transparent collaboration and the establishment of shared standards.

Heidelberg Engineering’s Role and Focus Areas

Through its involvement in CCOI, Heidelberg Engineering will contribute specifically to the AMD and glaucoma workstreams. The company aims to collaborate with partners to:

       • Harmonize clinically meaningful endpoints

       • Establish interoperable data standards

       • Shape innovation pathways that bring promising technologies to patients more efficiently while maintaining quality and safety

Leadership Insights

Kfir Azoulay, Managing Director of Heidelberg Engineering, will represent the company in CCOI’s working groups. Commenting on the announcement, Azoulay stated:

“Heidelberg Engineering has built its reputation on high-quality, multimodal ophthalmic imaging that is trusted across routine care, clinical studies, and vision-science research. By engaging in CCOI’s workstreams in general, and AMD and glaucoma in particular, we aim to contribute our imaging and data expertise to consensus efforts on endpoints, validation frameworks, and real-world deployment so that innovative diagnostics and therapies can be responsibly integrated into care.”

Malvina Eydelman, MD, Chief Executive Officer of CCOI, welcomed Heidelberg Engineering’s involvement through EssilorLuxottica’s Vision Architect membership:

“CCOI connects every stakeholder in the innovation ecosystem so that evidence, not geography or silos, defines the path to patient access. We welcome Heidelberg Engineering’s participation via EssilorLuxottica’s Vision Architect membership, reflecting a strong dedication to advancing the science, standards, and trust that drive responsible innovation in eye care.”

Supporting AI, Reference Standards, and Patient-Centered Measures

Heidelberg Engineering will also engage in broader CCOI initiatives focused on defining and validating patient-centered, clinically meaningful measures, especially those based on structural and functional imaging. These efforts are critical to reducing uncertainty during clinical development across various ocular diseases.

The company will further participate in key discussions related to AI evaluation, development of reference standards and implementation science.

By doing so, Heidelberg Engineering aims to ensure that AI-powered workflows enhance access, equity, and clinical outcomes across the field of ophthalmology.
