The Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI) and Carl Zeiss Meditec have launched a groundbreaking collaboration aimed at advancing cataract and refractive surgery outcomes. The initiative, called Ophthalmic Tech Innovation by ZEISS and SERI (OPTIZS), involves a combined investment of nearly SG$20 million over three years to drive innovation and improve vision care for Singapore’s aging population.
SERI and Carl Zeiss Meditec have a long-standing relationship dating back to 2008, sharing a commitment to advancing ophthalmology through education, research, and technological innovation.
“We look forward to the next three years as we embark on this exciting journey to develop novel surgical and diagnostic solutions,” said Professor Jodhbir Mehta, Executive Director at SERI and Program Lead for OPTIZS. “We hope that these culminate in better visual outcomes for our patients not only in the short term but in the long term too, and thereby, a better quality of life.”
One of the core objectives of the OPTIZS program is to optimize cataract surgery outcomes, enabling:
• Faster visual recovery for patients
• Long-term stability in vision
• Improved quality of life for individuals
The partnership also seeks to develop innovative procedures to treat refractive errors and presbyopia, addressing the increasing needs of Singapore’s aging population.
Ven Raman, Managing Director for ZEISS Southeast Asia, highlighted the importance of this partnership in the context of the region’s vision care needs:
“As we focus on shaping the future of ophthalmology and improving vision care in Southeast Asia, collaborating with partners like the highly regarded Singapore Eye Research Institute is great news for practitioners and patients throughout Singapore and beyond.”
With the OPTIZS initiative, SERI and Carl Zeiss Meditec aim to push the boundaries of ophthalmic surgery and diagnostics, ultimately improving visual outcomes for both young and elderly patients. This multi-year strategic partnership promises to significantly enhance the quality of life for people across Singapore and the Southeast Asian region.
This collaboration marks a vital step toward meeting the growing demand for advanced vision care solutions and reflects a shared commitment to innovation in ophthalmology.
