New World Medical Introduces Ahmed ClearPath ST for Glaucoma Management

New World Medical has announced the launch of the Ahmed ClearPath ST, a non-valved glaucoma drainage device designed to offer surgeons greater flexibility in tailoring treatment for glaucoma patients. The new device builds on the foundation of the original Ahmed ClearPath, with refinements aimed at expanding surgical options and enhancing individualized care.

Device Enhancements and Clinical Purpose

According to New World Medical, the Ahmed ClearPath ST introduces several key updates, most notably a smaller tube lumen pre-threaded with a 6-0 Prolene ripcord suture, and a 25-gauge needle included for scleral tunneling.

Commenting on the new model, Manjool Shah, MD, of The Kellogg Eye Center at The University of Michigan, stated:

“The Ahmed ClearPath ST represents a significant step forward, allowing glaucoma specialists to overcome long-standing limitations associated with traditional tube shunts. The smaller diameter tube enables excellent pressure control with the potential for enhanced safety, improved postoperative management, and personalization of treatment.”

Configurations to Support Surgical Customization

With the launch of the ST model, the Ahmed ClearPath portfolio now offers four configurations, combining two plate sizes, 250 mm² and 350 mm², with two tube sizes: the standard tube (305 μm inner / 635 μm outer diameter) and the newly introduced ST tube (127 μm inner / 457 μm outer diameter).

This expanded range allows for more precise adaptation to each patient’s anatomical and clinical profile.

The Ahmed ClearPath ST introduces features intended to improve surgical workflow, safety, and long-term outcomes:

       • Optimized Plate Design: The 250 mm² plate supports true single-quadrant implantation without the need for rectus muscle isolation, while the 350 mm² plate incorporates a winged design to avoid rectus muscle attachment points.

       • Anterior Fixation Eyelets: Designed for secure suturing and to allow for more posterior plate placement.

       • Flexible, Globe-Conforming Material: Promotes a natural fit to the curvature of the eye, encouraging the development of a low-lying, diffuse bleb.

       • All-Inclusive Packaging: Each unit comes with a pre-threaded 6-0 Prolene ripcord and 25-gauge needle, supporting a streamlined procedure and efficient scleral tunneling.
