Gentex Acquires eSight to Develop Electronic Eyewear for the Visually Impaired

January 09, 2024

Gentex, a global leader in electro-optical products, announced a significant move towards enhancing accessibility with the acquisition of eSight, a leading company in vision enhancement technologies.

The strategic acquisition is aimed at developing and manufacturing next-generation mobile electronic eyewear, specifically designed to empower individuals living with visual impairments. This initiative will be unveiled at CES 2024, the prestigious Consumer Electronics Show organized by the Consumer Technology Association, taking place from January 9 to 12 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

According to the official Gentex press release, eSight's wearable assistive technology has the transformative capability to enable individuals with visual impairments to perform daily tasks. The comprehensive medical equipment is designed to enhance vision for individuals affected by over 20 distinct ocular disorders, often resulting in users achieving 20/20 vision.

eSight eyewear, the flagship technology from the newly acquired entity, combines a high-definition camera, proprietary algorithms, and a robust processing platform. This combination works synergistically to relay and magnify real-time imagery onto two high-resolution screens positioned in front of each eye, thereby providing users with enhanced binocular vision.

Gentex, leveraging its expertise in digital vision, software development, and industrial design, has been actively collaborating with eSight since January 2022. The partnership has been focused on refining eSight eyewear by reducing device size, improving design aesthetics, enhancing overall system performance, and applying Gentex's advanced manufacturing expertise to optimize costs.

At CES 2024, Gentex will showcase the fruits of this collaboration, marking a significant step forward in the integration of cutting-edge technology to improve accessibility and enhance the quality of life for those with visual impairments.
