April 01, 2024

Alcon announced the appointment of Terry Kim, MD, as the company's new Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and Head of Global Medical Safety, starting in April. Dr. Kim, a renowned figure in the field of ophthalmology, brings a wealth of experience and expertise, particularly in cornea, cataract, and refractive surgeries.

Currently holding prestigious positions at Duke University Eye Center, including Chief of the Cornea and External Disease Division and Director of both the Refractive Surgery Service and the Duke Sports Vision Center, Dr. Kim’s role will involve integrating scientific and clinical priorities across Alcon’s Surgical and Vision Care franchises to better serve patients and eye care practitioners worldwide. Additionally, Dr. Kim will play a vital role in supporting the development of clinical evidence for Surgical and Vision Care and will represent Alcon in engagements with academic, scientific, industry communities, and government agencies.

Dr. Kim succeeds Stephen S. Lane, MD, who retires after a commendable seven years at Alcon and a total of 39 years dedicated to the field of ophthalmology. Dr. Lane's tenure at Alcon has been marked by significant advancements in eye care innovations and strong advocacy for clinicians, surgeons, and patients globally. His contributions include the development of key products such as Clareon and Vivity, the acquisition of vital ophthalmic pharmaceuticals, and the expansion of the Medical Safety team.

Franck Leveiller, Alcon’s Chief Scientific Officer and Global Head of R&D, expressed his enthusiasm about Dr. Kim’s appointment, stating, “Dr. Kim is an exceptional addition to our team. His expertise will not only build upon the solid foundation laid by Dr. Lane but also ensure we continue to meet the evolving needs of the eye care community with innovative solutions.”

Dr. Kim’s illustrious career is backed by his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine, followed by comprehensive ophthalmic training at Emory Eye Center and Wills Eye Hospital. He is a Past President of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) and has been honored with numerous awards, including the Achievement Award and the Senior Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO).

Alcon believes that Dr. Kim’s rich background and forward-thinking approach will greatly benefit the company’s mission to deliver bold innovations in eye care, marking a new chapter in its commitment to excellence and leadership in the global eye health industry.
