A Novel Approach To Trifocal IOLs

A Novel Approach To Trifocal IOLs

June 30, 2019

AcrivaUD Trinova is the world’s first and only sinusoidal trifocal IOL manufactured with Sinusoidal Vision Technology (SVT). Its sinusoidal optic design eliminates the sharp steps (diffractive rings) found with traditional trifocal IOLs.

The smoothly varying surface profile derived from the sinusoidal curve exhibits no sharp edges. This design minimizes glare and halo, and provides the highest levels of light transmission (92%) into the retina, as well as balanced light distribution through all optical diameters. Furthermore, Sinusoidal Vision Technology (SVT) also allows the AcrivaUD Trinova to compensate for minor post-op refractive errors, slight tilts and to provide excellent MTF results even in mesopic condition.

Minimized Photic Phenomena

Photic phenomena is one of the most important concern that affects IOL selection decision. Therefore VSY Biotechnology R&D focused on this concern and developed sinusoidal optical structure of AcrivaUD Trinova to minimize side effects like glare and halo, caused by the sharp-stepped optical structure of conventional trifocal lenses.

Highest Light Transmission into Retina (92%)

While the crystalline lens of a 30-year-old health individual has 95% light transmittance[1] , AcrivaUD Trinova is the IOL that provides the closest light transfer with 92% among all trifocal IOLs thanks to its sinusoidal optical structure.

Balanced Light Distribution

Light distribution plays a crucial role in obtaining seamless continuous vision. Conventional trifocal IOL designs distribute light energy in a ratio such that patients may notice zones of discontinuity with poor near and intermediate vision performance—especially in mesopic conditions—that leaves them dependent on spectacles. AcrivaUD Trinova’s balanced light distribution provides excellent visual performance, even in mesopic conditions.

Comfortable Reading Distances and Excellent MTF Results

Moreover, AcrivaUD Trinova provides the widest depth of focus among the diffractive IOLs on the market. This superior feature results in seamless continuous vision, allowing patients to see clearly not only at the three foci (near, intermediate, and far), but at all distances. AcrivaUD Trinova’s +3.00 D near addition and +1.50D intermediate addition are precisely designed to consider patient quality of life. It enables reading distances up to 80 cm, covering all daily requirements for near and intermediate vision. Moreover as shown in Figure 1 AcrivaUD Trinova shows outstanding MTF performance in total focus area from far to near.

The AcrivaUD Trinova Toric is also available!

The Acriva Trinova Toric is also available for patients with pre-existing corneal astigmatism, enabling surgeons to treat astigmatism and presbyopia at the same time, with sinusoidal optic design advantages.
