VirtuaLens Introduces Virtual Reality IOL Simulator for Cataract Patient Education

September 05, 2025

VirtuaLens has launched the Immersive IOL Simulator, a virtual reality (VR) platform designed to help cataract patients visualize and compare different intraocular lens (IOL) options before surgery. The platform aims to support informed decision-making by transforming abstract explanations into immersive, scenario-based experiences.

Addressing a Common Patient Challenge

Cataract patients often find it difficult to understand how different IOL types, such as monofocal, multifocal, and premium lenses, might affect their vision in everyday life. The Immersive IOL Simulator addresses this gap by enabling patients to experience potential visual outcomes in realistic lifestyle scenarios, including night driving, reading, and sports.

“Our mission is to empower patients to make the best possible decisions about their vision,” said John Branch, MD, CEO and Co-Founder of VirtuaLens. “VirtuaLens transforms how cataract and refractive surgeons guide and educate patients through one of the most critical decisions in their vision journey. Allowing patients to see and experience their lens options before surgery fosters confidence, trust, and understanding, empowering surgeons to guide each patient to the right IOL choice with clarity and certainty.”

Enhancing the Patient–Surgeon Conversation

The VirtuaLens platform enables side-by-side comparisons of lens performance, showing how each IOL type may impact vision quality in everyday contexts. This allows both patients and their families to engage more meaningfully in the decision-making process.

According to Robert Osher, MD, of the Cincinnati Eye Institute, “VirtuaLens represents a paradigm shift in cataract patient counseling. Patients can now experience a side-by-side preview, showing how different strategies and lenses affect their vision in everyday situations. The surgeon will benefit from time saved and knowing that the best possible education has been provided to help the patient make a confident decision.”

Key Features of the Immersive IOL Simulator

The platform offers a range of features designed to enhance the pre-surgical consultation experience:

       • Real-Life Scenario Experiences: Simulations include settings like golf courses, nighttime streets, and kitchen environments to mirror patients’ real-world activities.

       • Family Involvement: Loved ones can participate in the decision-making process by viewing the same immersive simulations.

       • Comparative Visualizations: Patients can see how different IOL types may influence lifestyle-specific visual needs, supporting more tailored decisions.
